01 / In plain language

What is oee intelligence?

Overall Equipment Effectiveness, or OEE, combines availability, performance and quality to describe equipment use against an agreed production model. The underlying records and definitions matter as much as the final percentage.

Useful when a team wants to distinguish time lost to stops, reduced production speed and rejected output instead of discussing all shortfalls as one problem.

02 / Before we begin

A useful starting point.

Bring these details to the first conversation:

  • Planned production time and the treatment of breaks or changeovers
  • An agreed reference cycle or production rate
  • Total output, accepted output and available stop records
An illustrative example

Review repeated short stops to understand how they add up across a shift.

03 / The approach

Define. Connect. Review.

  1. 01

    Agree the definitions

Decide how planned time, target speed and good output are counted so comparisons use the same basis.

  2. 02

    Collect the underlying records

Bring together available counts, timings and quality records. Operator-entered reasons may be useful when a cause is not available automatically.

  3. 03

Review a loss with the team

Use the breakdown to investigate a repeated issue. Check the source records before interpreting a percentage as an improvement or a problem.

What to establish before proceeding

OEE comparisons can be misleading when assumptions differ. Do not compare unlike processes without reviewing definitions, product mix and operating context. Missing or unreliable source records must be made visible.

04 / Practical questions

Know what to ask.

Do all records need to come from machines?

No. A defined first step can combine available machine data with reviewed operator records, especially for stop reasons and quality decisions. Define who enters and reviews each record, how timestamps align and how missing information appears before using the figures to compare production periods.

Is a higher OEE number always better?

The number needs context. It should support useful investigation while respecting product requirements, safe operation and the agreed measurement model. Check availability, performance and quality separately, using consistent planned time and reference rates. Investigate the source records before attributing a change to better production.
